Background of the Study
Modernization has transformed cultural landscapes worldwide, influencing traditional practices including body modification. In Ibadan North, traditional body modifications, once symbols of identity and rites of passage, are now confronted by modern aesthetics and health regulations (Adebayo, 2023). The integration of contemporary technology, media, and urban lifestyles has altered perceptions of beauty and cultural significance. This study investigates how modernization influences the persistence or abandonment of traditional body modification practices, considering factors such as globalization, media representation, and the intergenerational transmission of cultural values (Ola, 2024). Researchers aim to assess the impact of economic growth, education, and urbanization on the community’s adherence to age-old practices while exploring possible shifts in public perception. Furthermore, the study contextualizes these changes within the broader framework of cultural adaptation and identity preservation (Fagbemi, 2025). By correlating modern influences with traditional practices, the research highlights the dynamic tension between heritage and progress. This multidisciplinary approach provides insights into how cultural practices evolve under the pressures of modernization, thereby offering a nuanced understanding of the social transformation in Ibadan North.
Statement of the Problem
Traditional body modification practices in Ibadan North are rapidly declining due to the pervasive influence of modernity. The erosion of these cultural practices poses challenges in cultural preservation and identity continuity. There is an urgent need to understand the factors contributing to this decline and to evaluate whether modernization leads to the complete abandonment or transformation of these practices (Balogun, 2023). The absence of current, localized studies on this phenomenon necessitates a comprehensive investigation to document changes and propose strategies for cultural conservation (Ajayi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To document traditional body modification practices in Ibadan North.
To assess the influence of modernization on these practices.
To propose measures for cultural preservation amid modernization.
Research Questions:
How has modernization affected traditional body modification practices?
What factors contribute to the decline of these practices?
How can cultural preservation be balanced with modern influences?
Research Hypotheses:
Modernization has significantly reduced the prevalence of traditional body modifications.
Media exposure and urbanization are primary factors influencing this decline.
There exists a positive correlation between modernization and the transformation of traditional practices.
Significance of the Study
The study offers insights into the intersection of modernization and cultural heritage, aiding policymakers and cultural custodians in developing strategies to preserve traditional practices. The findings may contribute to a broader understanding of cultural change in rapidly modernizing societies (Emeka, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to exploring the impact of modernization on traditional body modification practices in Ibadan North Local Government Area only.
Definitions of Terms:
